Wall on Wall - Belfast’s Peace Walls
This short, powerful video shows that Belfast is not the only City to have physical barriers in place to keep communities apart. The “Wall on Wall” exhibition in Belfast in 2019 by German photographer, Kai Wiedenhöfer, highlighted walls that were separating people in 10 countries around the world, including Mexico-USA, Israel-Palestine, and North-South Korea.
In Cornerstone we have a strong connection with Peace Walls in Belfast, reminded every day of this legacy of Belfast’s troubled past on our way to work. One of our next Projects is due to take place on a section of the Peace Wall in West Belfast. A beautiful former Victorian mill, repurposed as a Factory and now sadly, derelict. The building now serves as just another buffer between two communities under the shadow of the Peace Wall erected in 1969 - a physical reminder of our chequered past. We want to change that.
Our vision is to have entrances leading on to both sides of the ‘Peace Wall’, for the project to act as a bridge between two communities. Not only would this project bring high-quality housing units to the area, but it would be a living, breathing example of what Belfast can become.
